John Burroughs occupies a permanent place in American literature. Though he was a leading literary critic in his day, he was a pioneer in the new school of nature writing and the most popular writer of his period in the field he made his own. Burroughs' legacy of some twenty-five volumes, of which more than a million and a half copies were sold during his lifetime, has had a profound influence on our appreciation of nature. Using the collections of the American Museum of Natural History Library as a springboard, the purpose of this site is three-fold: to serve as an online resource for Burroughs scholars and students by bringing together biographical and critical information about John Burroughs; to provide information about the John Burroughs Association and its activities; and to highlight the collections of the American Museum of Natural History, which contains a permanent exhibit dedicated to Burroughs, and its Library, which is a repository of several collections of photographs and early film. Using film to view a documentary of a trip John Burroughs took with railroad tycoon E.H.Harriman who decided to take a little vacation--one of the most ambitious American expeditions ever. Harriman invited 25 scientists, writers and artists--including John Muir, John Burroughs, George Bird Grinnell, L.A.Fuertes, and Edward Curtis--to join him on a 9000 mile exploration of the coast of Alaska. In the summer of 2001, a Smith College expedition, carrying a similar group of scientists, writers and artists, retraced Harriman's route, exploring some of the issues Harriman faced, and some he couldn't even imagine. The film chronicling these two expeditions presents a unique look at a century of change in Alaska. (Bullfrog Films, (610) 779-8226). |
